A quick 'chkconfig --list indentd' revealed the problem. Thanks Jerry!

ps -alef |grep identd

check your /etc/rc.d/rc?.d for entries started it.

#I have a related question. I'm in the process of hardening a system
running
#RH Linux 6.2. The system will be a FTP server, thus I only want ports 21
#(ftp) and 22 (ssh) open.
#
#I've almost accomplished the goal ... I scan with nmap 2.3b14 and I see
#these ports as well as port 113 (auth) open. But I've commented the 'auth'
#line in /etc/inetd.conf and SIGHUP'd inetd and port 113 is still open.
What
