[ale] Backing up >2GB partitions

Anyone have recommendations for backing up partitions bigger than 2 GB.
A friend (using Mandrake 6.1) blew up GNU tar when the output tape reached
2 GB and also blew up dump, with dump saying to get a newer version.

Ideas?  (The best I could suggest is to use GNU tar's exclude features to
to multiple backups, with each not exceeding 2 GB or try to increase dump's
limits.)
