As far as the computer goes, it can probably run both, as long as you
watch out for IRQ conflicts. When the cable modem tech support came
out and installed my mothers' cable modem, he de-configured the modem
in the computer.  My guess was that they probably did this to minimize
the possibility of IRQ conflicts or so that she didn't get confused by
the possiblity of having two different connection paths to the
internet. 

The computer might have also run out of slots.  E.g. Amy's computer
only has 2 ISA slots and they are taken up by a sound card and a modem 
card.
