WHOA, Michael. Let's not go over board. I did say that 'I' picked up on the
'them vs. us' attitude. That doesn't mean that it was everyone or that there
was a large contingent of that attitude. Just something 'I picked up.' I
could have been wrong. Anyway, I agree with the basic sentiment of your
note....

}Unix Guru Dude enscribed thusly:
}
}> }If we are going to be attending the AUUG meetings during the olympics
}> }why don't we try to contribute to their meetings and publicise Linux
}> }at the same time. One or more of us could offer to do talks with a
}> }Linux focus that would be of interest to the general AUUG audience.
}> }Something like how to setup a firewall using Linux or how their is now
}> }native support for Java, Appletalk, and etc in Linux. Isn't this the
}> }same goal as the Expo? To publicise Linux to other business/unix users?

}> I think this is a great idea. I kinda picked up a 'them vs. us' attitude
}> at the meeting Thursday. These two groups are working toward similar goals,
}> ALE's are just a bit more focused. I once was a regular AUUG attendee, so
}> I would suspect there are some would be 'converts' out there. I've been
}> working with UNIX for a few years, but have just recently gotten into Linux
}> because I hadn't heard of it.
}
}	WHAT!?!? I missed that meeting and maybe it's a good thing I did!
}Otherwise, anyone taking a 'them vs us' attitude toward the AUUG would have
}found themselves on the short end of an intense discussion over their
}ancestory, sexual preferences, and hygenic practices!
}
}	AUUG has had nothing but good will toward ALE. They regularly
}promote our meetings and our activities. Much of the turnout at our
}EXPO was a result of AUUG exposure. I happen to be one of the LONG TERM
}( > 8 years ) Unix guru's at AUUG and I'm one of the founding members
}of ALE (even if I haven't been to EVERY meeting lately :-) ). ALE was
}founded with the encouragement of a LARGE contingent of AUUG followers
}and largely patterned itself on some of the ideas and format of AUUG!
}
}	We should be looking up to AUUG as a big brother who has continually
}offered encouragement and help. Anything less makes US look like a bunch
}of spoiled brats!
}
}> I guarantee there are some folks at those meetings using some flavor of
}> UNIX at work and Windog 'something' at home. They are dying to hear about
}> Linux.
}
}	EVERY MEETING! Absolutely every meeting! Linux is one of the hot
}topics of discussion during the Guru Rap Session. Our meetings are announced
}at every AUUG meeting. When was the last time an AUUG meeting was announced
}at ALE? We distributed fliers at the AUUG meeting for our Linux EXPO and
}Lindsay made some fine announcements and promotions for our EXPO at that
}AUUG meeting!
}
}> One thing that would be good to present is the amount of 'stuff' Linux has
}> to offer. When I first got it, I had no clue I would be using it to
}> connect to my ISP, run an ftp and Web server. I know there are those out
}> there that think of Linux as a toy. We just need to educate them.
}
}	I'm doing the presentation at next months AUUG. The topic is going
}to be "Finding System Vulnerabilities". I'll be there as a representative
}of Internet Security Systems talking about system security and network
}vulnerabilities. This is my second presentation as a corporate representative
}in front of AUUG. I've also done a talk in front of ALE (dosemu some time
}ago). I will be demonstrating the Internet Scanner (picture SATAN on steroids)
}running on Linux on a laptop.
}
}	I hope to see lots of ALE members at AUUG. We certainly see a
}number of AUUG members at ALE. So you can be sure that any of this BULLSH*T
}'us vs them' is being heard by plenty of AUUG regulars. Whoever the creten
}was had better pull his head out and act like he's got a clue BEFORE we loose
}the support and admiration of the premier UNIX support group in Atlanta!
}That is the ONE thing we D*MN well can NOT afford!
