Hello all, here's the situation:

System is a 486DX/100 with 12MB of RAM, 420MB IDE drive with a Syquest   
105MB removable mounted on /home.  VLB motherboard, 2MB Cirrus video   
card.  External CDROM via Soundblaster (CD-only--no sound) interface   
card. Used as a single-port PPP server via modem and an SMC Ultra 8216C   
LAN card. (Yes the one with the annoying updatedb mail--thanks for the   
help on that, btw)

It's been up and stable for a while now with the 1.2.8 Kernel, but I had   
to go and get a wild hair to upgrade to 1.2.13 when I got my new   
Slackware 3.0 CD.  I patched incrementally from 8 to 13 with no apparent   
hitches, re-compiled, and viola.  Ftape barfed, but I re-compiled with   
source off the new CD, and did a manual insmod.  So far so good, and   
everything seems to be working fine.  So, what's my problem?  Glad you   
asked...

See, I had an information banner in /etc/issue that displayed prior to   
login.  Typical government disclaimer/warning that I have to put in   
there.  The new kernal replaced it with the default 'Welcome to Linux   
1.2.13' message.  I shrugged, and replaced it with the banner again.   
 Rebooted.  Back to the default.  I checked, and /etc/motd is rewritten   
at every boot, as well.  Superficial nosing through the (to me) obvious   
config files turned up nothing that would be overwriting those files on   
boot-up.  Buh?
