Description:

 Under limited supervision, the IT Support Prof Sr works within the College of Computing Technology Services Organization (TSO), primarily to provide Linux system administration for core servers in support of the College's administrative, research and instructional activities. Manage, monitor and troubleshoot system operations such as server installation, provisioning, patching, networking, file services, backup and recovery, email delivery, print services, authentication systems and integrated directory services in a networked, heterogeneous computing environment (Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX). Implement and automate well-defined system administration and system monitoring processes as well as event response and resolution procedures. Regularly work on unique, complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Assist in the testing and evaluation of prototype applications and equipment. Supervise student assistants in the performance of tasks and projects. Develop written documentation of computing and networking projects, policies and procedures.

The IT Support Prof Sr interacts with faculty, staff, students and vendors regarding IT issues associated with highly available core system services. The position works very closely with other TSO IT professionals and involves supervision of student assistants.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    * Install and administer Linux servers and maintain secure and appropriate patch levels. Identify and implement necessary server hardware replacement or upgrades to ensure servers are highly available and response times are not excessive. Develop, implement and perform backup and restore procedures for servers and desktop computers. Perform software license management.
    * Diagnose and resolve highly complex technical problems associated with computer hardware, software and servers.
    * Provide user application assistance.
    * Give technical presentations to users and management.
    * Develop standard operating procedures.
    * May design, code, test, debug and document custom application programs.
    * Miscellaneous duties as assigned and appropriate to position.


Qualifications:

Education Experience
Basic Qualifications:

    * Associate degree in Computing or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:

    * Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field. 

Work Experience
Basic Qualifications:

    * 4 years of experience supporting a computing and networked environment.
    * Must have Linux systems administration experience preferably in a complex, medium to large-scale, heterogeneous environment.
    * Requires knowledge of server installation and administration, system monitoring and troubleshooting, hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, patch management, configuration management, virtualization, networking, information security, account management, identity management, authentication and authorization, printer management and electronic mail services.
    * Requires knowledge of a UNIX scripting language (e.g. perl, ksh, bash) and common system administration tools.
    * Requires a high degree of judgment and exemplary customer service skills. ]
    * Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
    * Demonstrated expert knowledge with a variety of applications and platforms.
    * This position may be exposed to working near electrical circuits and requires handling of objects up to 25 pounds and some standing and walking. 

Preferred Qualifications:

    * Prefer experience in specific technologies such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Xen/KVM, Kerberos, LDAP, NIS, Active Directory, DNS, SSH, CUPS, SMB, CIFS, and NFS files services. Prefer experience in at least one programming language (e.g. Java, C++, etc.), databases (e.g. MySQL) and web server technologies (e.g. Apache, PHP, SSL). Experience in a college/university environment is a plus.
