Http is not a good protocol for file downloads, but as the others have
said ftp is worse...
The only reason one might prefer ftp is to simplify QoS: send [large]
downloads via ftp and reserve http for interactive/on-demand pages.
However this is only useful nowadays if your bandwidth is at a
premium, which doesn't seem to be your case.
So, forget ftp. I wish I could get rid of it in our mirror...
