mmcgrath did just this today for some new servers.   Not impossible for FI at all.

Is it really not productive in this case?  Updating one package might 
not create a maintenance nightmare.

Curiosity got the better of me - I tried to rebuild current Fedora 11 
rsync-3.0.6-0.fc11.src.rpm for CentOS 5.3 under mock.  Sorry, no 4.x 
systems handy to test on.  It just required a tweak of popt-devel -> 
popt in the spec.  It builds and installs fine.  Haven't actually 
*tried* it yet though.  :-)

Just consider this food for thought (or to puke -- your choice!)
