My real WAN router runs OPNSense on a 2015 PCEngines x86-64 box (12W). I expect it will last 10 more years, getting about 2 OPNSense updates every month. Of course, it can run Linux-based router software too.
By getting off the consumer router 3-5 yr re-re-re-purchase requirement, and switching to a relatively cheap (at that time) x86-64 box, I don't expect to ever worry about hardware obsolescence. And if the HW breaks, who doesn't have a spare x86 box lying around that can be used until a replacement arrives? I even have a spare 2-port Intel GigE PCIe NIC lying around, if that is needed.
I keep the wifi parts on separate hardware, actually upstream from my WAN router, connected to the ISP's router. I don't trust wifi security.
