Typically Registrars will send you notice of upcoming domain expirations.
The problem with that AND calendar reminders is they usually are aimed at a
single person. If that person is no longer with the company/organization
OR that email has changed things might slip through the cracks. I often
complained to registrars and certificate issuing authorities about their
processes not recognizing having single contacts for notifications didn't
work well for larger shops. (Of course we could try to use shared
mailboxes but they often resisted that.)
At my erstwhile employer we kept a list/database that had expirations which
more than one person could access. We'd usually do renewals a month ahead
of time.
That employer changed business name more than once owing to mergers or
acquisitions or just a desire to have a different name. Due to that our
email addresses changed more than once to new @domains. So long as the old
@domain was ALSO still valid it wasn't an issue for me.
Maddeningly, more than once some executive or marketing person decided to
buy new domains without bothering to go through IT as they were supposed to
do. Not surprisingly the first time we learned of those purchases was when
they called us in a panic because of expirations.

There are these magical things called calendars. You can put a reminder
into them for 60, 90 or 120 days BEFORE your domain is about to expire.
Sometimes, 90 days isn't enough time, I've learned.
At this stage, I renew or migrate to a cheaper registrar every 10 yrs -
that's the longest I've seen.
I used GoDaddy. It was cheap. Did 10 yr registrations to minimize hassles.
When GoDaddy started charging $20/yr for a renewal and I couldn't find a
coupon to get the initial price anymore, I found a better deal and
transferred.
Once, I didn't have a expiration reminder early enough to transfer the
domain, so I paid for 1 yr, I was pretty pissed about that, and set a
reminder to find a cheaper registrar starting in 6 months. Found a transfer
and $7/yr deal, rather than the $20/yr from GoDaddy, so the xfer was done.
$70 for a decade. I'll worry about it it 120 days before each domain
expires sometime in the 2030s.
A calendar reminder will remind me when it is renewal time.
I've always kept hosting, DNS, and registrar separate. Harder for any
single company to hold me hostage that way. I know it seems easier to
bundle, but then they have you by the balls.
