[ale] SATA drive not recognized by BIOS

Understood.  FWIW, this is software RAID (mdadm).    I ran the system 
for a week and a half with the "bad" disk removed from the array without 
any errors.

The system is old, but not ancient.   A Dell Precision T1700 which I 
bought refurb'd in 2018.  As far as I can tell from the interwebs, it 
was "new" in about 2015.   So about 8 years old.
