Hey Steve,
I'm not quite sure what you mean by, " Is this yet another forum or group
thing that doesn't fully support email communication?". We use Groups.io
as our mailing list manager, and meeting schedule notifier. It does an
amazing job of sending e-mails, blocking SPAM, and alerting us to new users
(subscribers). It also allows for moderation of users.
