When I worked at DEC we notice a sudden drop in memory prices, with larger chips being introduced suddenly. The hardware people attributed this increase in capability and drop in price to two things:
(1) stronger competition
(2) increased demand
However, the demand had nothing to do directly with computers and computation. After all, those demands were modest and easily forecast.
The demand was due to the introduction of Digital TV and high resolution digital monitors.
The demand was so great and so relatively "sudden" that the memory vendors were caught flatfooted. They went full scale into producing the "sweet spot" chips, so much so that if you wanted a 4kbit chip they told you to buy an 8kbit chip and just use half of it, because the 8kbit chips were cheaper than the 4kbit chips. After all, they would have to stop manufacturing the 8kbit chips just to make you "a few stinking 4kbit chips".
Yes, I actually remember having this conversation with them.
