I went fvwm for ?? (at least a decade or so), then went a few years each w/ lxde and xfce4; switched to i3-gaps about a year ago and have been surpisingly happy with it. Acrolinux had a much better sample config file than Ubuntu or Manjaro, which made it fairly painless to try out, and it has just the right combination of mouse-control-to-learn and key-control-for-speed, at least for me.

My historical pain points are the XF86Config mode lines, a lot of kernel reconfig/recompiles, X/Y/Zmodem/Kermit, and loading Xenix / Unix / Linux from floppies.
