A little early, but not dramatically so. Mdadm notified me of a failure
on Thursday in my office server -- the drive is just alive enough to say
F-U when queried. It's part of a set that is sitting at 41000 hours. I
ordered a complete new set -- 4.5 years is enough.
I'm using raid6 and triple-copy raid10, so the system is still redundant
with one failed drive. Otherwise my hair would be on fire to replace
quickly.

Woo... That's extreme. I replace drives when reallocated > 9 and
pending never gets more than one or two if you have the drive in an
array that is scrubbed regularly.
The rest of that set in my server have zero relocations and zero pending.

Wow. Amex screwed up the odds on that. In a decade of MD raid usage,
35k to 45k hours seems to be the expected lifetime of the not-quite
enterprise drives I buy.
