I think different people might mean different things by "mail server",
and specificity might be needed. For instance, there are SMTP servers
like qmail, sendmail, postfix and the like. There are also POP and IMAP
servers like Dovecot, which are completely different things and to my
knowledge don't get you blacklisted. There are probably other
kinds of servers that handle some aspect of the email lifecycle.
