I really don't think the choice of OS is causing the problem. I >think< my problems are all tied to the interaction of the OS with the BIOS.
I have no idea what is going on in grub either.
I have been talking about booting from the CD drive -- but of course it is a CD/DVD drive and modern OS.iso files are way too big to fit on a CD.

You could try openSUSE Leap.
I'm running it on all of my personal devices, and I absolutely have to have KDE.

Yes.
I am keeping Fedora on my main box, but I much prefer KDE over Grub (I am NOT trying to start a flame war now) and Fedora no longer supports KDE. Debian/Ubuntu/Mint offers a KDE desktop/apps.
Sean,
who is now fighting a BIOS that has removed any way to boot from the CD drive!!!!!!!

Any particular reason you're changing distros?
You might verify you can install the distro you know on this hardware first.
It will be easier to work out the configuration details no something you know, then if you want to try something different, you will at least know you have a good hardware config to work with.

Well, not quite a brick. The boot process ends with a terminal window and this prompt: grub>_
It's been a decade or more since I last had to muck about with grub. I have no idea at all what I might be able to do at this point. I am still trying to shuffle BIOS settings -- hoping that land on the combination that works.

That's that I did -- and now I have a brick!
Apparently I am caught in some sort of diabolical hell caused by EFI and Secure Boot.
The BIOS software doesn't have a usable manual and the Ubuntu install program seems to believe (wrongly) that it plays nicely with this crap. It even requires me to set up a partition just for EFI!
I'm still fighting this. Has anyone here recently installed a current Debian OS on a computer damned with a UFI/Secure Boot BIOS?
