Success! I got both Windows and Linux to boot after reinstalling
linux. Thus far no major problems. I am somewhat puzzled by the new
partitions, but I will worry about that later.
My first impulse was also"The empire strikes back", but that is
probably bs. Windows offers several partition tools, why would they do
that if they want to be disruptive?
Anyway, thank for the suggestions, they were quite helpful.
