You no longer need use licenses, free or otherwise, starting with XenServer 6.2.
If you have previously installed the free license, you will get a nag message when it is due to expire, but you can ignore it.

issue where I can't apply the free license any more. When I click on
the server I have upgrade the free license goes away.

Do I need to use that License server now?

Have you tried SUSE Studio? Need to create a Live CD, an app you want
to package and distribute , or create your own linux distro. Give SUSE
Studio a try.
