FWIW, I believe most modern distributions use alternatives to link vi to 
vim anyway. The following is from Ubuntu 14.04.

elw at xbook:~$ which vi
/usr/bin/vi
elw at xbook:~$ ls -al /usr/bin/vi
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Oct  3 13:49 /usr/bin/vi -> /etc/alternatives/vi
elw at xbook:~$ ls -al /etc/alternatives/vi
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Oct  6 13:44 /etc/alternatives/vi -> 
/usr/bin/vim.basic
