[ale] Email system

Login to the GoDaddy account:
Insure Private Registration is disabled for the domain.

Insure the email address they have for you is correct for Registrant, Admin and Technical contacts.

Unlock the domain - many registrars are locking domains to prevent fraud (they claim - if someone can social engineer the transfer they also social engineer the unlock).

Get the "authorization code" for the transfer from GoDaddy site. (Note that "transfer" links at most registrars are for transferring IN not OUT so you have to avoid clicking "transfer" but instead look for the authorization code.)

Do NOT initiate the transfer from the GoDaddy site - do it on the site of the registrar to which you are transferring the domain.
Insure that the new registrar has your correct email.
Typically the new registrar sends you an email indicating they've gotten the request and ask for the authorization key. You have to input that key within 5 days for the transfer to go through.

P.S. It is NOT only on renewals that GoDaddy locks accounts. If they can find any little reason to deny the transfer they seem to do so. One of the ICANN rules in my not so humble opinion should be that the link to transfer OUT ought to be as prominent as the one to transfer IN and it should walk you through what needs to happen. You can usually ferret out the steps from the website help or forums but they really shouldn't be allowed to make it so hard to do.

Any pointers on actually getting that transfer done? I'm looking to move my domains.

Don't use GoDaddy unless you like folks that play games with your stuff when you're ready to quit using them.

Every time we've had a need to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy they prevented the transfer attempt AND then locked the domain "for our protection" for 60 days to prevent us from re-attempting the transfer.

My opinion: this is doomed.
Put everything on Godaddy and let them deal with it, unless email is a hobby for you.
Then access it from everywhere/anywhere. Evolution on Linux, IMAP on smart phones and tablets.
I used to run a postfix server until I realized it was driving me crazy.

I'm in the need to figure out a new method of email, that does no include Exchange.

Currently I use CentOS to fetch all our our mail from our provider and store locally. Users then use IMAPS and SMTP to receive and send.

We get hammered with Spam that has nasty attachments. One user asked me what we could do about this. My thought is that I'm going to have to install a real commercial SPAM firewall. I also looked at Google business email. My options currently are to look at purchasing a Baracuda appliance to cut down on the crap or use Google email services.

With the Baracuda I'll stop fetching mail from the provider and smiply chane our DNS MX records to send mail directly. I'm not sure how it will feed email to my mail system or if it is the IMAP/SMTP server. Anyone use one of these devices?
