[ale] ext3 extended atttributes not supported on ext4?

No. The error was on the restore.

If it had errored out on the backup we’d have seen it since it was a manual vs automated backup run. If it had been severe enough the backup job would have failed with an odd status that we’d have researched at the time.

When we changed the filesystem to ext3 and did the restore it did not give any complaints. After the restore we converted the ext3 to ext4 using a procedure for same we’ve done a few times in the past.

Like I said my suspicion is that NetBackup actually stored the extended attributes as ext2 since it was an ext3 filesystem (which is just a journaled ext2) and on restore was using the ext2 ioctl to try to add back the extended attributes but couldn’t since it was ext4. (i.e. I suspect it should have been using an EXT4 ioctl for the ext4 filesystem but didn’t know to do that since the source was ext3.)

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it looks like the error is on the source file not the target filesystem. Bad inode?

We were doing a restore from a backup taken off an ext3 filesystem (with defaults in fstab) from an older install to an ext4 on a newer install. This was mostly successful but on some of the files we saw:

EXT2_IOC_SETFLAGS failed for /database/postgresql/msi/archive/76699438 - Extended Attributes not set. Errno = 95: Operation not supported

On looking into that I find discussion of similar issues when trying to restore from VxFS (Veritas) to ext3 or from UFS (Solaris) to ext3 but nothing regarding ext3 to ext4.

Looking at the man page for this stuff on line it simply says extended attributes are supported by ext2/ext3/ext4.

I’m wondering if my issue is simply that the NetBackup software is calling “EXT2_IOC_SETFLAGS” given that this is ext4. Is there some compatibility option I can put in my ext4 mount options to make it accept that that call?

Currently I’m having my co-worker create an ext3 filesystem so he can restore to it so we can either then copy from that to the ext4 or simply convert the ext3 to ext4 but I’m thinking it may be simply a compatibility option we need to give it for the restore.
