What are you experiencing?

Most of the routers don't have battery backed RTCs so they have to have
the clock set prior to ntpd starting up. I run ntpd on my Linksys WRT
operating as a router attached to my AT&T modem and it works fine if and
only if ntpdate/ntpclient (distro dependent) is used prior to ntpd
starting up. If I start ntpd without using ntpdate/ntpclient, then ntpd
tries to measure the initial clock offset, sees that it's absurd (some
many hundreds of thousands of seconds), and aborts.

My init.d script is modified to call ntpclient first, sleep and run ntpd
which will remain calm after that.
