Geany on Linux GUI
Ted on Windows
Nano in Linux CLI, since it's almost always pre-installed on any distro.

I don't program, just write papers and the like, so my text editing needs
tend toward font manipulation, word lookups and statistics, and easy access
to help. I flirted with Jed based entirely on its inclusion of command and
options cheatsheets, and really wish Nedit wouldn't break every time I use
it.
