I think a seminal work… essentially NECESSARY to understand the true nature and importance of the Free Software ideal is (of course) "The Cathedral and the Bazaar". (http://www.unterstein.net/su/docs/CathBaz.pdf). It definitely irons out the wrinkles in the stated thought processes.
MY favorite regarding UNIX, and by osmosis Linux and how UNIX is designed in contrast to how many proprietary systems are designed is enumerated in the first chapter of the Eric Raymond book "The Art of UNIX Programming". (http://catb.org/esr/writings/taoup/html/graphics/taoup.pdf)
When I mentor in LOPSA or when I train a new admin, I generally get their take on Free Software, and if they're "Windows heavy" or have slightly askance views or thoughts, I'll have them read those and come back to discuss. It's remarkable how many times their perspective changes, even if ever so slightly.
