I think that looks like what I may be looking for - especially the simple part :) OpenShot and avidemux both are about to get downloaded and tried out..lol

avidemux is a tool for "chopping" videos under Linux. If you have to
do more editing you need something else like video editor.
for Windows - virtualdub
both free and fast.
