Sunday at the GA-400 LUG, a nice man came in saying that he had heard about
linux and wanted to know what it would do for him. He had Vista and was
unhappy. Pure end-user. Had never even seen Linux before. He chatted with a
few others and listened for 2 hrs.
It isn't all IT people, though that does seem to be the vast majority.
If the class are free - the ATL Ruby group does this - then the crowd will
start at an average lower level of skill and experts will drop in for
different topics.
For paid students, it will be people sent to training by their jobs, usually
with a very specific purpose to pass a cert test of some sort.
Formal learning has a place, but since most linux people come in with
different backgrounds, perhaps a group of mentor volunteers for 1-2 hrs each
week would be something useful. The personal touch really cannot be replaced.
