[ale] sudo reboot now - harmful??

It sounds like a hardware problem, some sort of corrupted system settings,
or possibly a conflict between whatever computations you're doing on the
GPU and the actual graphics. First, try to connect your monitor to the
on-board graphics or another graphics card, if that's available.
