Yes, I fully expected that (when you start off with 'this may seem
strange', that's pretty well par for the course).  After more than 20
years on Fidonet, USENET, mailing lists, and the various 'thingies' that
the web community have come up with for discussion (and having been on
the ALE mailing list since 1999), it would be hard not to expect it (I
was just about convinced that they had USENET in Job's time when I read
the NIV rendering of Job 16:3: "Will your long-winded speeches never
end?  What ails you that you keep on arguing?").

I *did* go googling, but found that with the approach I was taking,
information about getting to the repository via ssh pretty well swamped
what I was looking for.  The discussion here has been quite helpful,
even if some think I'm out of my gourd.  I've described the situation in
another email.  win-sshfs and something similar called Dokan look
promising at first glance.  If one of those don't work, I may well go
the X route, as despite my use of the term 'remote', this is on the LAN.
