Yes, once I listened to Adam Smith's _The Wealth of Nations_ in my car as
read by the software called "Festival" in about 2002. Paaaaaaaaaaiinful.
If you *really* like that idea, though, the simple innards of my localcast
program might be of interest to you in any attempts to hack together
something similar.

That said, I bet it's worth checking for text-to-speech features of phone
apps. I like BeyondPod, and although I haven't tried the feature, I see
that it exists:
