[ale] Can't connect to port 53

What thread are you responding to here?  I don't see any others in the thread yet I see other messages from Ale.

I agree that verifying basic connectivity using telnet command is a valid troubleshooting step.
telnet <DNS host> 53
If that doesn't work nothing else is likely to succeed.

Use of "nslookup" is deprecated for basic resolution - one should use "host" instead.

Using dig is better than nslookup for DNS troubleshooting.
dig @<DNS host> <options/target domain>

I was attempting to test the dns configuration via nslookup and it couldn't connect to the dns server.  I was doing elementary troubleshooting which involves checking to see if the port was open and the easiest way to test that is via telnet, as far as I know.
