I just got a chap Gateway/Acer laptop and did just that. On Win 8, go to settings - advanced - general - start options( not very sure)and change the boot option. When restarting PC, you will be at the bios. Change from UEFI to legacy and put boot order to cd-rom or whatever the device you want to boot from.

He's still thinking about it. Then, I thought, what if the computer is required to have UEFI to run Win 8? And, if it does have UEFI, will it even be possible to put Mint 13 on it? I have no experience with UEFI.
