Trademarks are very different from patents - trademarks can be almost
anything, while patents are mostly inventions - methods/machines/etc.

For example, Disney has the Sleeping Beauty's castle as a trademark, but
it's not a patentable thing, while Goodyear had a patent on the chemical
industrial process for vulcanizing rubber for strrong tires
