[ale] how do I test 4 GB or more of RAM

It's very possible that the video card is using the 
remaining/unaccounted memory.
You didn't detail what brand of PC it was, but if it doesn't have a 
dedicated video card, chances are memory is being used for video.
When the  system only had 2GB did you see the full 2 GB?
In 32 bit mode usually less than 3.89GB is available,  but it's all 
hardware dependent.  Some memory space has to be left open for peripherals.
