It seems obvious now, and IBM certainly lacked some foresight in the
matter; however, not all computers did need an operating system, at least,
not the kind of OS that is prevalent today. I did not know much about
computers in the 70s, but I do remember that the computer we had in the
physics lab in college had to be bootstrapped into the program we wanted to
run.
