Yes, you can actually chain-load GRUB 2 from GRUB Legacy in order to
test it. Essentially what you do for that is install GRUB 2 on your
partition, while GRUB Legacy lives on your MBR. When you're happy and
comfortable with GRUB 2 you can "promote" it to the MBR on your drive
and it will only then replace GRUB Legacy.
If it works for the group, I'd be willing to present on GRUB 2 again at
the meeting in either May or June, because I have to update the
presentation a little bit to fit the relevant topics that have been
asked recently on the ML.
