What does the “file” command tell you about your original file.   Some files are something like “ascii with extremely long lines” – you think you have multiple lines but in fact it is a large single line (or multiple large lines).   If you cat the file your screen might wrap it so you think it is small lines which is why the file command is helpful in determining what it really is.

Used to be Mac was \r, Linux was \n and Windows was \r\n. Not sure if that is still the case

Pretty sure Mac and Linux have the same line feeds.
