[ale] OT: interview. Tie? Jacket?

When I just interviewed with the Suit, the VP I interviewed with mentioned I looked good in it as he (and everyone else) was wearing Jeans and a Polo. I commented I'm glad as I rarely wear one since my company does not require such. He laughed and accepted that. Was the suit overkill? Yes. Did I show I was willing to go above and beyond? Yes. And 3 days later they asked for References. It was worth the short amount of discomfort to get on the short-list.

I’ve never been turned away for wearing a suit and tie. Interviewers have mentioned it wasn’t necessary but never sent me away for not fitting their culture. The only time I ever had an issue with appearance was when I was being presented for a job at a law firm that didn’t like beards. The headhunter was ready to send me on to the client but then realized I had the beard. I told her I’d be willing to shave if I got the job but not just in hopes of getting it. They chose not to send me to the client.

The old saying is: You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

If someone would somehow judge that you are too stuffy because you wore a suit to the interview then they don’t really understand the dynamic of the situation and would likely not be pleasant to work for in any event. The idea of researching the company to find out their dress code sounds fine on the surface but I disagree with it. Just because the CEO or other key employees wear jeans doesn’t mean that they want YOU to wear jeans to the interview.

Wear the suit, leave the Jacket off until you get out of the Car to go in the building, Once you get in the interview ask "Do you mind if I remove the Jacket, it is a bit warm". You want to show them you are willing to go the extra step beyond just your technical skill set. When you get up to leave, put the Jack on and straighten it. When you get back to the car, throw it in the back seat.

I concur. For UPS I'd wear slacks and a tie.

Regarding jeans for an interview: Only wear jeans if you have dark jeans with a modern finish. These pale stone/acid washed things that gray beards trends to wear don't cut it for an interview. A nice pair of jeans can cost significantly more than a pair of khakis and for that reason you can be considered well dressed in jeans.

I've never worn jeans to an interview but I have hired people who did.

Wear shirt and tie, no jacket. Jacket in this heat would make you sweat, a lot.
