[ale] OT - Hughs Net Latency and VoIP.

I worked for a small vsat isp for a while. We did inet+voip services
targeted at business using TDMA technology. Basically there is an
inherent physical latency of 500ms, then the added latency of over
subscription add another 25 - 200ms. We offered CIR at a very premium
price.

I've never used hughs net my self, but the technology isn't all the
different. I would suspect over subscription is way worse there being
a residential service. We on the other hand did some niffty spoofing
on either side of the link and was able to shave off about 50ms of
latency.

Voip service "worked" in a scene that you can place a call, and have a
conversion. The sound of the call was crap due to the low BW codec
that was used to get it work. Also lots of echos and garbage noise.

I'm guessing verizon hasn't put in the time into do the needed
tweaking for a high latency network.
