I cheated - instead of using the ntpd daemon, I use Chrony (an
ntpd-replacement designed for use where the internet connection is
intermittent. I started using it w-a-a-ay back when I was on dialup),
which is much easier to set up to act as a server. While I no longer
need the intermittent-connection functionality, I still use it on one
server to sync to internet ntp servers. The other machines in the home
network run standard ntpd, set up to use the Chrony-using machine as a
source.
