Well, somehow between kernel compiles, xorg.conf and sysctl, I did
finally get OpenGL working decently with kde and flash.
Also noticed the default X acceleration under ubuntu is UXA, which
FreeBSD doesn't support. Graphics card is a Quadro NVS 285.

I would readily try FreeBSD as a server. The desktop can work, it just
takes a bit of effort and head scratching to get there.
