Assuming you're talking about reseting the root password if reading what
you wrote and reading between the lines a bit... In this case the old
saying about losing physical security would hint to the other option...
If you have a live USB or CD image you can boot the machine up with you
can obviously mount the harddrive and either chroot into the path or
edit the shadow file directly to reset the password. Also illustrates
why you need to worry about physical security not just system or network
level.
