[ale] no toolbars in mint 12

I just installed mint 12 on my nephew's computer and mint 12 has no toolbars at
all. (upper or lower).


I haven't had much luck googling it so-far.


I ran upgrade from the terminal and also installed mint-meta-mate as suggested
by this bug report.

Has anyone run across this?
 
Would I be having better luck if I used a word other than 'toolbar' to describe
this problem when I google it?
