It's own memory. (And you can find on-boards that have dedicated memory
and simply "grow" using shared memory, but they're more expensive).
The thing is that graphics cards use MMIO (memory-mapped I/O) to
communicate with the system. They also provide I/O ports for control,
but the display itself is addressed through the processor's address bus.
