I will recommend "but is only my opinion" some flavor of puppy Linux installed on USB stick. I have used different puppy derivates depending of hardware I am using. On my Asus EEEPC 900 I was using puppeee 4.4 because is set exactly for Asus hardware (resolution, keyboard shortcuts, etc.). On my wife laptop I have tried newest Puppy Lucid. Everything works (wireless, camera, desktop resolution) out of box. Main advantage of puppy for me is the way they handling R/W cycles of SD cards/USB sticks. You are creating big file on USB stick where puppy saves your documents, newly installed programs and settings changes. And writes in this file when you shut down PC or every 10 minutes when you are working. But as was mentioned before you have to tell us what is the purpose of alternative Linux on your laptop ?

To install on USB stick or SD card there is unetbootin software and universal-usb-installer is your choice. Puppeee has script file to create bootable USB/SD card included in /boot directory can be started from windows or Linux.
