11.04 can probably (IIRC) run Gnome 2 just fine, just select it once
from the GDM greeter, and your preference should be remembered.
All support for Gnome 2 has been dropped from Ubuntu as of 11.10. GTK
and all supporting components have been bumped to their GTK/Gnome 3
versions.
