See here:  http://alsa.opensrc.org/MultipleCards more then you EVER wanted to know about ALSA can be found in that wiki, but it helped me set up my box so that a built in, but not connected (internally) HDMI sound device on my video card was not defaulted to be the sound device.

I changed SUBSYSTEM to SUBSYSTEMS and it worked.

Is there a way to make sure the internal card is ALWAYS the default card
for gnome?
