Instead of specifying "stable" in your apt sources, you should specify
the name of the release. For example (from [1]):

`deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted`

That way your system is looking for updates that specifically apply to
your installed version. Otherwise, when a new release comes along,
you'll get that prompt that there are a BUNCH of updates available.
And it won't do s dist-upgrade for you.

A silly Windows admin at work did that with a Debian box he is somehow
in control of. He made a lot of people unhappy that day.
