Most official agencies in the government also spell it with a U.
There's no official transliteration guide, particularly in the press for
taking Arabic names to Anglicized spellings and pronunciation.  See
Colonel Gaddhafi and all the variants used for him.

Also, depending on where in the world you get your reports, you may see
"bin Laden" or "bin Ladin."

All news is biased, because all news is written and reported by humans.
Journalists by trade are trained to try and mitigate that, but I think
like many educational pursuits, some of the quality has been worn away
from degradation in the system.  Then, we as readers bring our own.
