[ale] weird printer problem

So Laptop is wireless and using VPN to offsite location
Desktop and printer are wired
All 3 are using the same wired/wireless router.

Desktop prints and laptop loses VPN connection.

I would suspect a router issue over printer. Maybe the print connection is
flaky or the protocol is broken.
Is the printer setup using Avahi (apple calls the auto-discovery something
else)? The discovery protocol may be trying to probe the laptop to see if
it's a printer and the only way the laptop can respond is to drop the VPN.
